Susan Kaburu's Story

Posted on Dec 18, 2006

It was a Sunday morning and we were on our way to church. I carried my youngest daughter Anne on my back and held Njeri’s hand as we walked along. On reaching the medical school gate that opens up to Ngong Road, I turned left intending to go to the Baptist church across the road but Njeri tugged at my hand and requested that we go to the church on the opposite side. (Njeri had been to that church once with her aunt and was eager to go again.) ‘Well then,’ I thought to myself, ‘Since it is our day out I might as well take them where they want to go.’ The church was Nairobi Pentecostal Church on Valley Road.

When we arrived, an usher received us with such warmth and we felt very welcomed. After a time of praise and worship, the preacher rose to speak. He read from the book of second chronicles 5:1 – 14; this is the passage about Solomon’s dedication of the temple and his sermon had the title, ‘The Glory of God Filled the Temple’. In his sermon, he emphasised the following points.

First, he spoke on the need for self-consecration as an individual before coming into God’s presence. He sighted how the Israelites always washed themselves before coming before the Lord.

Secondly, he spoke of the importance of unity in praise and worship at the temple. The harmonious singing of the Israelites brought down the glory of the Lord. This glory filled the temple until the priests were unable to minister – it was a time for God to minister to His people.

Finally, he spoke of how the Holy Spirit filled the disciples on the day of Pentecost and their lives were never the same again. They went out from that day, proclaimed the word of God without any more fear, and turned the world upside down.
